2018 Maddens Rise Shiraz
Estate grown, hand picked and hand made.
The grapes (a mix of Shiraz clones PT23 and 1654) were hand-picked then hand-selected over a sorting table prior to destemming. A layer of stalks was added to the bottom of a single stainless steel open fermenter and the destemmed whole berries tipped on top. The fruit was then ambient soaked for 3 days prior to initiation of wild fermentation. Plunging occurred up to once daily for optimum gentle extraction, integration and layering. Vinification was similar to how we make Pinot Noir. After 15 days on skins, the wine was pressed, settled overnight and racked to barrel for 100% malolactic fermentation in oak. The wine was racked once only to gain texture from light lees contact and maintain freshness.
This Shiraz is rich with great length of flavour. The nose is earthy and displays violets, nutmeg, lavender and char.
The palate has a vibrant weight and quality to it, with notes of pepper, plums and dark chocolate seamlessly integrated with the complex tannins.
