2016 Maddens Rise Nebbiolo


Estate grown, hand-picked and hand-made.

The grapes for this wine were hand-picked from a single block, then hand-selected over a sorting table prior to destemming and direct tipping of whole berries to a single open fermenter. The fruit was ambient soaked prior to initiation of wild fermentation. A combination of foot and hand plunging a maximum of once daily was undertaken for optimum gentle extraction, integration and layering of tannin in the wine.

After 23 days on skins, the wine was pressed, settled overnight and racked to barrel for 100% malolactic fermentation in seasoned French oak 500 litre puncheons. The wine was racked once only in its maturation to gain texture from light lees contact plus maintain freshness.

Our Nebbiolo displays sour cherry, cinnamon, rosewater, strawberry, Lady Grey tea and fennel frond on the nose. The palate shows persimmon, red currant, herbal notes, rhubarb and cola nut, combining to be elegant, long and persistent. Dusty lingering tannins extend to a resounding finish. Unique to the Yarra Valley, unique to Maddens Rise.
